Air taxi vs. helicopter: what’s different?
Both take off and land straight up. A helicopter lifts with one or two big rotors. An air taxi spreads the work across many smaller electric ones, and some fly on a wing once they’re moving. Here’s how they compare on noise, seats, range, cost, and rules. We checked every source on October 18, 2026.
How is the aircraft different?
The FAA’s vertiport guidance tells them apart by rotor count. It covers aircraft with three or more propulsors, not helicopters with one or two main rotors. The FAA also calls powered-lift the first new category of civil aircraft since helicopters arrived in the 1940s. Is an air taxi quieter?
The companies say so. These are each company’s own figures, not independent tests:
- Joby: 45 dBA in cruise, heard from 500 meters (1,640 feet), and 65 dBA when landing, from 100 meters (330 feet). Company-stated. Source: Joby technology page (opens in new tab).
- SkyDrive: about 65 dB at street level when its SD-05 passes 150 meters overhead. It puts helicopters at 80 to 100 dB. Company-stated. Source: SkyDrive SD-05 page (opens in new tab).
How many seats, and how far?
Joby’s aircraft carries one pilot and four passengers, with a target range of up to 100 miles (161 km) on one charge. BETA’s ALIA carries five passengers. Company-stated. Sources: Joby 2025 Form 10-K (opens in new tab), BETA aircraft page (opens in new tab).

Is it cheaper to run?
BETA puts the energy cost of its ALIA VTOL at $28 an hour, against $311 an hour for a Bell 407 helicopter. Joby says its aircraft has 90 percent fewer emissions than a helicopter on a 37-mile trip in the Los Angeles area. Company-stated. Energy is one part of a fare. Joby and Archer haven’t published a ride price yet. Joby has described a goal of matching the price of a ground-based taxi. Source: Joby investor presentation, 2021 (opens in new tab). When will air taxis launch? covers what’s known about fares.
Do the same safety rules apply?
Not exactly. The FAA certifies air taxis as powered-lift, and its 2024 pilot and operating rule applies helicopter operating rules to some phases of flight. In Europe, EASA certifies them under a dedicated special condition, SC-VTOL. Sources: FAA, October 22, 2024 (opens in new tab), EASA, VTOL (opens in new tab).
